By Gary Katzer.

Shockwaves are once again resonating through the world of radio control, and Spektrum Technology is once again at the epicenter. Spektrum 2.4GHz DSMĀ® Technology has been revolutionizing both the surface and air radio landscapes for years, and the time for the next revolution is here. Spektrum is proud to release module systems for the most popular module-based aircraft radios. These module systems make it possible for anyone who uses a JR or Futaba transmitter to now have the convenience, safety, and reliability of Spektrum 2.4GHz technology without requiring the purchase of an entirely new radio system. Above and beyond the technological advantages offered by Spektrum, these module systems utilize tested and proven 2.4GHz DSM technology that has been in use for years. When combined with Spektrum's technical support and distribution channels, the Spektrum Air Module Systems are the next big breakthrough in radio control. Let's take a closer look.

The Technology

Introducing Spektrum Modules for AirReceiversThe Spektrum Air Module Systems have been in development for nearly 2 1/2 years and have a number of exciting features. Through extensive product testing with a variety of different base radios, the Spektrum Air Module System incorporates the benefits associated with DSM2 (second generation protocol) technology into them. Spektrum's exclusive DSM2 technology provides exceptional latency and responsiveness while maintaining the signal integrity that today's savvy pilots demand. Beyond these basic features, DSM2 technology offers an increase in bit-rate and provides superior path diversity that allows a receiver to see a broader range of the RF environment.

There are a number of additional features that, when combined, quite simply add up to the best module system ever created for an aircraft radio. Built-in collision avoidance software prevents another radio from operating on the same frequency as one already in use. Collision Avoidance Software makes it possible for pilots to enjoy a 100% crystal-free experience, eliminating the need to wait for open frequencies or frequency control at the flying field. The DSM2 technology that goes into each and every Spektrum Air Module makes it possible to fly any size model from foamies to huge 33% planes and larger. Best of all, the DSM2 Spektrum Air Module System operates faster than most conventional PCM radio systems currently available, giving you that all-important locked-in feel and precision that is so critical.

How Spektrum Air Modules Work

Introducing Spektrum Modules for AirInstalling a Spektrum Air Module System into your radio is a snap, thanks to the lightweight and self-contained design. Installation of the module is as easy as removing your original module and antenna, inserting the new Spektrum Antenna Adaptor into the antenna hole, plugging the new Spektrum Air Module into your radio, connecting the new Spektrum antenna and connecting the antenna cable to the module. Installation takes less than five minutes and, except for the lack of a telescoping antenna, your radio looks and feels exactly the same as before the upgrade.

Introducing Spektrum Modules for AirBy plugging into the existing module slot on the back of your radio, the Spektrum Air Module Systems utilize the existing PPM output of your existing radio to build the secure DSM2 link. The number of usable channels is determined by the number of channels output by your radio's PPM stream. For JR users, this translates into a maximum of 9 channels, while Futaba ® radios output a maximum of 8 channels via the PPM stream. There are two different combinations available for each base module. One combo includes an AR7000 receiver, while the other includes an AR9000 receiver. It's important to note that, regardless if you select a 7- or 9-channel Spektrum Module System to start with, the modules themselves are identical; the only difference is in which receiver is included with the system. The Spektrum Air Modules are compatible with DSM2 receivers from Spektrum, including the AR6100, AR7000, and AR9000.

Inside the AR9000

The original Spektrum air receivers introduced some amazing technology to the air market, and the AR9000 continues that proud tradition of pushing the technological envelope. Taking DuaLink to the next step, the AR9000ensures that you have the best RF link possible while providing the precision and control you need to fly with confidence. The AR9000 could almost be referred to as a receiver system, as it can utilize up to four receivers at any one time. Two main receivers are built into the casing of the AR9000 itself, while much like the AR7000, an additional remote receiver plugs into the main unit. In some installations, such as high-performance jets, it may be desirable to add in an additional fourth remote receiver. Doing so allows the AR9000 to see more of the broadcast signal than ever possible before, providing the most precise control and locked-in feel on the market.

Spektrum's Flight Log

Introducing Spektrum Modules for AirBeyond the multiple-receiver setup, made possible by the AR9000's ingenious design, the addition of an integrated Data Port allows pilots to truly fine tune the antenna and remote receiver placement. By utilizing this Data Port and an exciting new tool known as a Flight Log, pilots can now see if individual receivers are subject to fading or overall frame loss during a flight. For the first time ever, pilots have the ability to eliminate the radio signal part of the equation if there are issues in flight. The Flight Log can be permanently mounted in your fuselage or you can plug it into the Data Port after a flight. The flight Log will indicate if there has been any data loss in any of the 4 receivers. The truly remarkable aspect of the Flight Log is that, even though you may never feel or notice a signal loss while flying, nothing gets past the Flight Log. For the first time ever, you can truly rate your RF link performance and make appropriate changes to your mounting setup to correct and resolve any potential issues thanks to the Flight Log. If your RF link checks out, this can indicate that you may have a problem elsewhere, such as low receiver pack voltage or a failing servo. The Flight Log will display the voltage of the receiver pack for you as well.

The groundbreaking Spektrum Air Module Systems allow you to upgrade your current module-based transmitter to DSM2 specs easily and affordably. When combined with the AR7000 and AR9000, you have one of the safest and most secure RF links available while maintaining all your existing model setups. In addition, those who enjoy flying parkflyers can even utilize the tiny AR6100 receiver as well, opening up even more opportunities. There is simply no better time to upgrade your existing radio system to Spektrum 2.4GHz technology than now.
